Mera Peak Trek in Nepal

Mera Peak Trekking is something unique. Mera Peak in Nepal is considered a trekking peak and this means that you can technically reach this peak on foot. Okay, it's not a walk in the park, but it's not really mountaineering either. Nevertheless, this is a real six-thousander and when you climb Mera Peak, you have a certain right to boast. Read our blog post about Mera Peak Trekking and make the most of your first time climbing higher than 6,000 meters or 19,685 feet.

What and Where is Mera Peak?

Mera Peak is a mountain in Mahalangur district in the Barun sub-district of the Himalayas and is administratively located in Nepal's Sagarmatha region in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal. With its 6,476 meters it is classified as a trekking peak. It comprises of three main peaks: Mera North, 6,476 meters; Mera Central, 6,461 meters; and Mera South, 6,065 meters, as well as a smaller "trekking peak", which is visible from the south as a separate peak but is not marked on most maps of the region.

The region was first explored extensively by British expeditions in the early 1950s before and after the ascent of Everest. Members of these teams included Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay, Eric Shipton and George Lowe. The first ascent of the Mera Central was made on 20 May 1953 by Colonel Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing (who was known as "The Foreign Sportsman"). Roberts was heavily involved in building the trekking industry in Nepal in the early 1960s. In May 2005 he was posthumously awarded the "Sagarmatha National Award" by the government.

What Is So Special About Mera Peak Trekking?

If you've everclimbed Kilimanjaro, you may have wondered what it would be like to cross the 6000-meter mark. Indeed, Kilimanjaro is a five-thousander at 5,895 meters. Mera Peak, at an altitude of 6,189 meters, is popular with beginners and serves as a preparation for higher mountains such as Everest. Although it is physically demanding, it requires relatively little technique and can be climbed by anyone who is reasonably fit. Of course it is not that easy. It needs a solid crash course in high altitude mountaineering, but with a good guide you can do something really special.

Kanchenjunga | mountain in Nepal

Kanchenjunga, also spelled Kangchenjunga or Kinchinjunga, Nepali Kumbhkaran Lungur, world’s third highest mountain, with an elevation of 28,169 feet (8,586 metres). It is situated in the eastern Himalayas on the border between Sikkim state, northeastern India, and eastern Nepal, 46 miles (74 km) north-northwest of Darjiling, Sikkim. The mountain is part of the Great Himalaya Range. The Kanchenjunga massif is in the form of a gigantic cross, the arms of which extend north, south, east, and west.

Kanchenjunga is composed of rocks of Neoproterozoic (late Precambrian) to Ordovician age (i.e., about 445 million to 1 billion years old). The mountain and its glaciers receive heavy snow during the summer monsoon season and a lighter snowfall during the winter. The individual summits connect to neighbouring peaks by four main ridges, from which four glaciers flow—the Zemu (northeast), the Talung (southeast), the Yalung (southwest), and the Kanchenjunga (northwest). The name Kanchenjunga is derived from four words of Tibetan origin, usually rendered Kang-chen-dzo-nga or Yang-chhen-dzö-nga and interpreted in Sikkim as the “Five Treasuries of the Great Snow.” The mountain holds an important place in the mythology and religious ritual of the local inhabitants, and its slopes were no doubt familiar to herdsmen and traders for centuries before a rough survey of it was made. The first known map of Kanchenjunga was made by Rinzin Namgyal, one of the pandit (“learned”) explorers of the mid-19th century, who made a circuital sketch. In 1848 and 1849 Sir Joseph Hooker, a botanist, was the first European to visit and describe the region, and in 1899 the explorer-mountaineer Douglas Freshfield traveled around the mountain. In 1905 an Anglo-Swiss party attempted Freshfield’s suggested Yalung valley route, and four members perished in an avalanche.

Mountaineers later explored other faces of the massif. A Bavarian expedition led by Paul Bauer in 1929 and 1931 vainly attempted to climb it from the Zemu side, and in 1930 the German-Swiss climber Günter O. Dyhrenfurth attempted it from the Kanchenjunga Glacier. The greatest height reached during these explorations was 25,263 feet (7,700 metres) in 1931. Fatal accidents on two of these expeditions gave the mountain a reputation for unusual danger and difficulty. No one else attempted to climb it until 1954, when, partly because the Sikkimese objected, attention was again turned to the Yalung face, which is in Nepal. Gilmour Lewis’s visits to the Yalung in 1951, 1953, and 1954 led to a 1955 British expedition led by Charles Evans, under the auspices of the Royal Geographical Society and the Alpine Club (London), which stopped within a few yards of the actual summit in deference to the religious beliefs and wishes of the Sikkimese. Other Kanchenjunga climbing milestones include the first woman to reach the summit (Briton Ginette Harrison in 1998), the first solo ascent (Frenchman Pierre Béghin in 1983), and the first ascent without the use of supplemental oxygen (Britons Peter Boardman, Doug Scott, and Joe Tasker in 1979).

About three years later of formation of park, Durga BhanjanGulma of the Nepal Army started to take care of the national park. Since this lake is known through King Mahendra, people also know it by the name of Mahendra Lake. It is also said that King Mahendra named this lake as ‘Apsara’ after being captured by its beauty.

Gokyo Lakes of Everest Region

Gokyo  Lakes of Everest Region

In addition to lofty peaks like Everest, Lhotse, and Cho Oyu, the Everest Region is also home to stunningly beautiful high altitude lakes. The serene calmness of these turquoise lakes contrasts beautifully with the lofty ambition of high mountains. When we go to the Everest Region, one of our favorite pastimes is seeing how the beautiful Gokyo Lakes changes colors throughout the day.

Here we present Gokyo and four other lakes of the Everest Region.

Gokyo Lakes

Gokyo Lakes is a freshwater lake system situated in the Gokyo valley, consisting mainly of six lakes: Gokyo Cho (Dudh Pokhari), Thonak Cho, Gyazumpa Cho, Tanjung Cho, Ngojumba Cho, and Kyajumba Cho. Thonak Cho is the largest lake out of them. However, if you go further up the valley, there are at least 20 other high-altitude lakes. Because of their significance, Gokyo and associated wetlands of 7,700 ha (30.0 sq. mi.) were designated a Ramsar site in September 2007.

The best thing about these lakes is that there are hotels right next to the most famous of the lakes, Gokyo Cho. Indeed Gokyo village is very charming because of the soaring sound of freshwater, reflections of crystal mountains, and the ever-changing lakes. And if it is winter, you also get to walk or skate on the lake.If you are looking to explore all the lakes, set aside a day. If you start from Gokyo village, it will take you three hours to complete a round trip to Thonak Cho (fourth lake) and six hours for a round trip to Ngozumpa Cho (fifth lake). It is entirely worth the time as you will be rewarded with beautiful views of Cho You, Gyachung Kang, Ngozumpa Glacier, Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Makalu.

It is also worth noting that a rookie mistake while planning a trek to Gokyo is planning to stay only a single day. A lot of people just immediately realize their mistake when they get here. You need at least two nights to fully appreciate the beauty of this lake system.

Altitude : 4,700 m- 5,000 m
Latitude : 27° 58′ 49″ N
Longitude : 86° 40′ 7″ E

How to go there?

You can either plan a 12 day trek to Gokyo Lakes or do a 15 days trek that passes through both Everest Base Camp and Gokyo. Alternately, it is also possible to take a helicopter to this stunningly beautiful lake.

Difference Between Leopard and Cheetah

Generally, cheetahs have a more slender build as they chase and kill their prey. Being the fastest land animal on earth, the cheetah needs to have a slender build to be streamlined and more efficient at running. A leopard, on the other hand, has a more muscular build. They ambush predators, meaning they stalk their prey and pounce on them when they are within attacking range. The tail of the cheetah is quite flat, and it acts as a rudder on an aeroplane. They help in cornering and changing directions at speeds of over 80 km/h. The Leopard’s tail is more stocky and tubular. It acts like a counterweight and helps the animal climb trees and to drag their kill up a tree. The other obvious difference is in their coats. Cheetahs have clear black spots all over its body and a leopard has irregular, rose-shaped spots called rosettes on its body. Cheetahs have black, tear-like streaks that run from the corner of their eyes all the way down to their cheeks. These are theorized to help absorb blinding sunlight and reduce glare in the intense heat of Saharan Africa. These spots are completely absent on the leopard’s face.Difference Between Leopard and Cheetah The animal kingdom has innumerable organisms under its massive tree. And many organisms share the same features as other organisms. Sometimes, this leads to confusion between the different species. Similarly, the difference between Leopard and Cheetah is quite inconspicuous because they possess the same body layout and similar markings on their body. Let us have a look at the difference between cheetahs and leopards based on their structural characteristics:
